Haha, I never understand the cries of people who hate fast travel in open-world FPRPGs like FO3/NV. But neither do they want to spend hours just walking and doing nothing else. When people say "We don't want fast travel," I think what they actually mean is "We don't want * INSTANT* travel." They don't want to get to their locations without any real effort. Some areas would be "empty," and some would have secrets that you could check out if you noticed them, or passed by them. Also, if you do it this way, you won't have to painstakingly render absolutely every single square of terrain in the game. And if you found anything interesting on the way, it would instantly appear on your map, and you had the option to go check it out, or come back to that map marker later. Days would roll past on the clock, and you had the potential for random encounters. Using this, you could travel quickly throughout the map without having to simply "walk" the whole way. Use a World Map similar to Fallout 1 and 2. On the other hand, people don't want to spend a long time wandering back and forth for those "fetch quests." Even if it's a compelling quest, long travel time can dull your enthusiasm. One one hand, some people think it ruins the immersion and shortens the game. A lot of people are divided on the subject of Fast Travel.
